![]() Batman 3D is native 720p with a very similar frame-rate to Batman 2D because Rocksteady chose to use the TriOviz reprojection technique. If you're playing in SBS and you bring up the 360 "guide" its looks terrible because MS didn't make it SBS aware. Also the xbox 360 dashboard supports framepacking while it doesn't have proper support for SBS. It turns the TV into 3d automatically so it does have that bonus. I accept 720p framepacking as "good enough" for consoles. A strange number but it's enough to say that SbS would achieve similiar quality for similiar performance. Rendering at anamorphic 904x1016 for SBS output is about the same amount of pixels as 1280x720. ![]() It's not as if they are force to render a full 1920x1080 and then downscale to 960x1080. This is a 12.5% improvement in resolution.Īs I said, it may be moot, it may not be able to render the game at these resolutions without serious hits in performance. For half-sbs it could be rendered at anamorphic 960x1080. They can render 2D game in 720p and get good performance.ģD means significantly more load so full 720p frampacking may not be possible, but for this excercise lets assume it's doable.įor sbs they aren't forced be a "native 720p game" and scale. The transformation would be much less severe. At no point does that reduce you to 640 lines. 1280 lines is down scaled into 960 lines. Transforming a square pixel 1280x720 into anamorphic 960x1080 would be a lossy scale but you would not lose half your horizontal resolution. That certainly doesn't mean that SBS would be a dismal 640x720. Still, lets entertain that you're correct that they're stuck being a "native 720p game" and that SBS 3d would be done by scaling and not rendering. So it may be moot that framepacking has a lower max potential than half-1080p. It's possible that Batman is rendered at sub 720p in 3d mode. Indeed consoles may not offer enough performance for some games at full 720p, let alone half-1080p. The developer can choose to render at different resolutions in different situations, but their choices are limited by performance. 720p framepacking may be good enough considering consoles are limited by their performance.Ĭonsole games aren't pegged down to only one resolution and scaling as you describe.
